Cambria Babydoll Hack

For this hack, I wanted something cute and flirty, so I decided to turn the Cambria in to a babydoll top! For this hack, I used the standard sewing supplies called for in the pattern plus 1/4 inch knit elastic (not woven!) to gather the skirt. If you use a different gathering method, feel free to skip the elastic.

Step ONE: Print tape, and cut

I used the low scoop, plain shoulder, long sleeve, slim cut options for my top.

Note: I opted to do an old school FBA instead of using the darted FBA included in the pattern because I didn't want the top to be too billowy.

Step Two: Measure the side waist length

Measure from your arm pit to where you want your gathered skirt to start, usually at your natural waist. I used 8 inches. Transfer those measurements to your pattern pieces plus seam allowance. I used 1/4 inch seam allowance, same as my elastic. Fold your pattern pieces at the newly drawn line so you can cut your fabric.

Step Three: Calculate skirt length

Measure the bottom of your bodice (at the fold line) and multiply that measurement by 1.5 to get the length of your skirt. Measure from where you want your skirt to start to where you want it to end. I used 12 inches (keep in mind I'm 5'1") Add seam allowance to the top (1/4 inch) and to the bottom (1 inch) for hemming. You don't need side seam allowance.

Step Four: Cut out your pieces!

Make sure you cut your skirt pieces on the fold!!!

Step Five: Gather your skirt

I am going to walk you through how to gather your skirt using 1/4 knit elastic. If you prefer a different method, please adjust accordingly.

Cut your 1/4 inch knit elastic to match your front bodice. Mark quarter marks on the elastic and on the skirt piece.

Match up the quarter points on the elastic and the skirt with clips or pins. Using your sewing machine on the longest straight stitch, sew the elastic to the skirt, stretching the elastic till its flush against the fabric.

Step Six: Attach the skirt to the bodice

I use a serger to attach my skirt to my bodice. I disengage the knife and sew right over the elastic with a 1/4 seam allowance. You could also use a stretch stitch on your sewing machine.
